Beef Stocker Pasture Walk, Frederick, NW Wisconsin Graziers
August 31 @ 10:00 am - 12:00 pm
The NW Wisconsin Graziers Network and UW-Extension invite you to a beef stocker pasture walk to be held on Saturday, August 31 at 10:00AM. Hosts John and Maureen Maloney operate a small rotationally grazed stocker herd of 10 animals on about 25 acres of new pasture on their 120 acre farm north of McKinley. The Maloneys are in their first year as graziers and have a new farm, with new fences and new water system to describe and experiences to share with pasture walk attendees. Come see the new high tensile fencing system, new above ground and efficient water system, cost effective cattle handling setup, and flexible temporary fencing strategies used by John and his family. We plan to discuss and demonstrate soil health issues in their sandy loam soils, discuss contract custom grazing arrangements for beginning graziers and pasture clipping to control weeds and improve forage quality, along with other topics. Also we will be answering any and all questions from pasture walk participants. If you are also a new grazier or are considering starting a new grazing operation this would be the best possible pasture walk for you to attend. Learn about all the help that is available through County Land and Water departments or NRCS and all the steps needed to get started with successful rotational grazing. The farm is located at 3371 5th Street a mile off of Co Hwy E, about 2 miles SE from Indian Creek and about 6 miles north of McKinley, WI. From Hwy 48, at McKinley in Polk Co, take Co Hwy E north about 6 miles and turn right (at Blue house and barn) onto 340th Ave. going east about a mile until reaching 5th Street, turn right and continue a half mile to their farmstead (brown roof house with steep driveway). Watch for the signs. This program is free and open to the public. UW-Extension provides equal opportunity in employment and programming including Title IX and ADA requirements.
